Ken Ludwig’s The Gods of Comedy - presented by Meetinghouse Theatre Lab

Ken Ludwig’s

The Gods of Comedy

Described as "...a very funny, Mel-Brooksian romp through academia, Greek mythology, and personal empowerment…", Ken Ludwig’s The Gods of Comedy has razor-sharp wit, absurd misunderstandings, and an escalating chaos that would make even Zeus shake his head.

Daphne and Ralph are young classics professors who have just made a discovery that's sure to turn them into academic superstars. But something goes disastrously wrong, and Daphne cries out in a panic, "Save me, gods of ancient Greece!"…and the gods actually appear! As it turns out, she has summoned Dionysius, a god of comedy, (but also the god of wine and partying), and Thalia, the muse of comedy. The gods are eager to help, but they’re Greek gods, and so their help is not the straightforward, efficient kind a simple human might hope for. The Ivy League will never be the same as this pair of screwball, albeit well-meaning, deities encounters the carnal complexity of college co-eds, campus capers, and conspicuous consumption.

Cast (in order of appearance): Michael McFarland, Jaimie Paige, Cathy Johnson, Marc Bellenoit, Rick Andrew, Frank John, Seeta John, Shelly Curtain.

Rated PG-13

Directed by Shari John

**To benefit the Schoodic Food Pantry, the incredibly talented pastry chef, Donna Harmon, will host a bake sale May 15-17 with delicious treats to enjoy at the show or to bring home!**

“Ken Ludwig's The Gods of Comedy” is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals on behalf of Samuel French, Inc., www.concordtheatricals.com

Tickets: $20

Festival Noon Performance: Carol Bailey String Band

Carol Bailey String Band

Our program this season is "We the People - Our Story in Song" in celebration of the 250th anniversary of our nation.  The songs drawn from this whole time tell our story and show the ways we gained and protected our rights and freedom.  We love to have the audience sing with us as we celebrate what we need to do to keep the rights and freedom we cherish.

By donation. Help us keep the 'free' in free events! Donations are always welcome and appreciated.

About the Band - A program of the Litchfield Senior Center, the Carol Bailey String Band is an all-volunteer band, whose members come from more than a dozen towns.  In their 60s through their 90s, band members discovered the timeless fun of making music together and of spreading joy to other people.  They sing all kinds of music, once described as "music that everyone likes", and they play a wide range of instruments, including guitars, ukuleles, mandolins, harps, bass, cello, banjo, snare drum and other percussion instruments, and sometimes recorders, violins, harmonicas, and slide trombone--and they keep learning more instruments!  The band has presented lively performances at the Schoodic Arts for All Summer Arts Festival, Franco American Heritage Center, schools, senior centers, assisted living facilities, grange halls, churches, community centers, and the Litchfield Fair.

Festival Performance: Downeast Book Babes

Downeast Book Babes: From Ancient Rome to Downeast Maine—A reader’s Journey

The Downeast Book Babes present an evening of storytelling and poetry—a little mystery, a little history, haiku and tanka, some audience participation, and fun.

Tickets: $10

Sherry Christie’s love affair with Ancient Rome started with Rosemary Sutcliff and Mary Renault. While she was busy writing for financial businesses, a Roman tale started unfolding in her imagination. It took years for the first scribbles to become Roma Amor, but book two (Amber Road) followed quickly, with a future book three hot on its heels. She lives in Jonesport. https://roma-amor.com

The award-winning author of a haiku collection and two short-story collections set Way Downeast, Catherine J.S. Lee continues to celebrate her coastal corner of Maine in stories, poems, and photographs. A high school educator, journalist, activist, and community-radio DJ, she still finds time to chase clouds and sunsets with her digital cameras, tend her perennial gardens, and be deeply involved in the local arts community.

Faye Weatherbee, author of the ongoing Blueberry Bay Cozy Mystery series, lives in a Downeast town very much like the one in her books—tossing in a glimpse of Maine history and a glimmer of magical realism as amateur sleuth Lisa and her clue-sniffing Havanese, Ziggy Starnose, find themselves fish out of water. Faye also shares her love of living here in her Substack series “Beyond the Page.” Like good mysteries, our event may harbor a reveal... https://fayeweatherbeebooks.com

Acclaimed poet, singer and songwriter Danielle Woerner and her husband Claude Johnson fell in love with the Downeast-Acadia region two decades ago. Since 2014, their Sunrise County Arts Institute in Milbridge has offered writing groups, concerts, singing lessons, and school drama activities. Danielle's poetry has been included in international journals and, closer to home, anthologies published by Resolute Bear Press (Robbinston) and the Eastport Arts Center, plus her own chapbook. https://daniellewoerner.com, Substack

Gordon Thomas Ward’s Mr. Harenten and the Serenity Ledge Picnic

Let your imagination soar with this delightful, multimedia presentation of the beloved children’s literature story Mr. Harenten and the Serenity Ledge Picnic. Author and award-winning songwriter Gordon Thomas Ward will transport you to a charmed woodland realm along the coast of Maine, right here in Winter Harbor, that is home to Mr. Harenten, a thoughtful and timid Snowshoe Hare, and an assortment of his animal friends.

Mr. Harenten dreams up the idea of having a grand picnic with his friends. When he realizes he’s created a predicament, his solution relies on devising a plan to overcome his fear of gathering clover behind the dark and imposing Ledge House. Mr. Ward guides the audience through the story with the help of projected images, puppets, storytelling, and live music.

Festival Performance: Tough End String Band

Tough End String Band

The Tough End String Band serves up a spicy-hot acoustic brew concocted in Orono’s historically notorious Tough End neighborhood.

This group has fun entertaining audiences with the diversity of its selections: a tango evolves into surf rock; some 1930’s jazz song might follow a traditional fiddle medley; or a bluegrass tune is juxtaposed with White Stripes

Formed almost 10 years ago in the lively pub scene that has re-emerged in Orono’s Tough End (a century after the area was filled with musicians, mills, taverns, and brothels), the band has expanded its performances to festivals, fairs, receptions, and other venues. In addition, it has produced three studio-recorded albums – and, during the pandemic, two full-length, online-concert videos.

The current TESB members include Anthony Viselli on fiddle and mandolin, Sam Furth on Guitar, and Susan Elias on upright bass.

Tickets: $10

Nate Sabat

With upright bass as his sole tool for accompaniment, Nate crafts wildly intricate arrangements, each one inextricably tied to its song. His playing, while rooted in American folk music, goes far beyond any preconceived notions of the instrument's role within the genre. With a relaxed, vocal sound and equal fluency with pizzicato and the bow, Nate takes full advantage of the never-ending variety of sounds and textures the bass has to offer. GRAMMY-winning cellist Eugene Friesen says, "Nate has so much going for him: The ability to propel any groove with chops and subtlety, a sweet bow sound that can vocalize any melody, fiercely great intonation, and, most importantly, a musical intelligence and intuition that operates with a constant smile.”

Meetinghouse Theatre Lab - Out of the Hat!

October through April, 2025 - 2026
Out of the Hat! - Readers’ Theatre Series

What’s "Out of the Hat!?” It’s a fresh, compact production with a rehearsal time of one day and performed that same night. The play, the director, the cast are all picked "out of the hat" so to speak -- this makes it fresh and exciting.

It goes like so ... we gather at 11:00am to read the chosen play -- many of us for the first time. After a first read, the director for the play retires to cast the show. Once done, the group works to put the play on its feet with the result being an outstanding and very fresh performance at 6pm.

Come to read and play at 11:00am or come to watch it that evening. Admission is free, although donations are gratefully accepted.

Interested in reading? We would love to have you! To read, you will need yourself, writing utensils, dark clothes, a potluck, energy and a penchant for fun.

Please message Meetinghouse Theatre Lab on Facebook or e-mail Cathy at cathyjohnson2012@hotmail.com if you would like to be a part of the day's production.

Lies, Laughs, and Holy Hypocrites: A Tartuffe Workshop Reading

When a smooth-talking con artist worms his way into a wealthy household, only the wisecracking maid sees through the act. Can she save the family before they lose everything to a man who’s "too good to be true"?

Coffeehouse Performance: Chris Ross

Chris Ross

Join Hancock native Chris Ross for an evening of songs and stories in lovely Hammond Hall.

Chris Ross has been writing and performing his songs on the coast of Maine for nearly 20 years. This venue provides a unique and intimate opportunity to hear them (and some of the stories behind them) as they were meant to be heard.

Ross has spent years tucked away on the coast of Maine developing his voice as a writer. Inside the arsenal of tracks he’s penned, one finds dangerous, hard-hitting reflections; stories of love, life and longing. Tinted with an appetite for self-destruction, his writing style is smooth and eloquent while remaining sincere to genuine grit of experience. A landscape of song much like Maine itself: humble yet dramatic, severe yet sweet, cold and resonant with a nearby fire throwing heat.

February’s Reading: The War of the Worlds by Orson Welles

The War of the Worlds was a Halloween episode of the radio series The Mercury Theatre on the Air which was broadcast live on October 30, 1938 over the CBS Radio Network. The episode was directed and narrated by Orson Welles as an adaptation of H. G. Wells' novel The War of the Worlds and is infamous for inciting a panic by convincing some members of the listening audience that a Martian invasion was actually taking place.

Meetinghouse Theatre Lab - “Cold $torage” by Dustin Sleight - A Staged Reading

Meetinghouse Theatre Lab - “Cold $torage” by Dustin Sleight - A Staged Reading

Meetinghouse Theatre Lab will present a staged reading of “Cold $torage” by Dustin Sleight of Portland, Maine, winner of its 7th annual playwriting competition.

Cold $torage is a fast-paced and dark comedic farce that satirizes our modern obsessions with technology, consumerism, and corporate influence.
Set in "Joe's Diner" in Portland, Maine, the play unfolds over a single day, revealing the chaos that ensues when Joe's attempt at a secret money-making scheme begins to go off the rails.
Through quirky characters and an ever-growing level of absurdity, the play offers a humorous take on our short attention spans and growing reliance on new technologies.

Joe’s handle on controlling the chaos steadily unravels as the kinetic pace hurtles the cast and audience through a playful yet pointed exploration of the absurdities of modern life.

The staged reading of Cold $torage will be directed by Mark Lancaster. Mr. Sleight will attend the workshop and watch as his piece is brought to life. There will be a small wine and cheese reception afterwards and a brief talk-back with the audience.

The playwright's reading always takes a slight departure from the usual Out of the Hat workshop format in that it will be pre-cast with a rehearsal prior to the workshop and performance date.

Admission is free but donations gratefully accepted.

Contains adult language.

Playwright Bio:
Dustin Sleight is an engineer by day and an aspiring writer by night, currently living in Portland, Maine. After moving to southern Maine in 2015, he has gradually adapted to the concept of enjoying "beach days" by stockpiling sunscreen and investing in quality beach umbrellas. His favorite pastimes include the perpetual build-out of his at home music studio, books, movies, and spending time in the great outdoors.

December’s Reading: My Three Angels by Bella and Sam Spewack

A little different than the traditional holiday fare, reviewers testify to the clever plot, the charming characters, and the humorous dialogue of My Three Angels, a comedy set in a French Guiana on Christmas Eve. Three convicts working as roofers intervene to help a family from financial ruin and heartbreak…and bring some unexpected luck and good cheer to the Christmas festivities!

One Man Show of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol

One Man Show of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol

One Man Show of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol

We invite you this holiday season to share our presentation of a one-man show of Charles Dickens', A Christmas Carol, at Hammond Hall in Winter Harbor and help support the Schoodic Food Pantry (see details below).

“Marley was dead, to begin with.  There is no doubt whatever about that.  Old Marley was as dead as a doornail.”

So begins A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. Some say this short story (first published in 1843) transformed Christmas into a major holiday. The tale has inspired movies, operas, readings and countless stage performances around the globe.

Veteran actor Tim Pugliese makes the stage vibrate with his interpretation of Dickens’ Holiday tale. In an impressive tour-de-force Pugliese moves about the stage as he recounts this classic story and plays all the parts - by himself. You’ll find yourself looking at characters that aren’t really there, but you will see them in your mind, just as surely as Pugliese himself does. This form of story-telling is fun for the whole family.

Adapted for stage and directed by Shari John

Bring a non-perishable food donation for The Schoodic Food Pantry. For every person who contributes, an anonymous donor will give $2 to the Pantry.

Donna Harmon will work her magic and provide wonderful baked goods for the refreshment table and bake sale! All refreshment donations and proceeds from the bake sale to benefit the Schoodic Food Pantry.

Also showing on: Saturday, December 13 at 7pm!

Tickets: $20 suggested donation, free for children 12 and under.

Coffeehouse - Ghost I’ve Come to Know: Chilling Stories and Live Music

Ghost I’ve Come to Know: Chilling Stories and Live Music about ghosts by Gordon Thomas Ward, singer-songwriter, author, and veteran paranormal investigator.

Did you ever wonder what’s on the other side? As a well-respected investigator of ghosts and hauntings for forty years and an author on the topic, Mr. Ward has developed a distinctive approach and body of evidence to support the belief in the survival of the human consciousness after death.

This program includes photos, audio recordings, developing theories, information collected from his favorite, historic, investigation sites, and the live performance of his spooky songs. This presentation will entertain you, offer a fresh perspective on ghosts and put you in the Halloween mood.

Gordon Thomas Ward is an award-winning, multifaceted artist who’s been wowing audiences with his adult alternative/folk rock songs. With four GRAMMY-balloted albums in the last six years, he’s worked with notable musicians such as Noel Paul Stookey (Peter, Paul, and Mary), Eric Troyer and Mik Kaminski (Electric Light Orchestra), and Kevin Barry (Jackson Browne, James Taylor). Gordon’s songs are crafted and delivered in the style of acoustic Neil Young, Jackson Browne, and Dan Fogelberg, and Skope Magazine says Gordon is “setting the gold standard for singer-songwriters for generations to come.” Gordon is also the author of Ghosts of Central Jersey, was a member of Haunted NJ and co-starred in the pilot film Paranormal Intervention.

Doors open at 6:30pm

October’s Reading: The Yellow Wallpaper

Get in the Halloween spirit! Join us for a spine-tingling Out of the Hat workshopped reading of The Yellow Wallpaper, Charlotte Perkins Gilman's classic gothic horror story, written in 1892, adapted for the stage. We invite you to experience the chilling tale of a woman confined to bedrest by her physician husband. Isolated and stripped of intellectual stimulation, she becomes obsessed with the grotesque yellow wallpaper in her room.

Adapted for the stage.
