August 16 – 31, 2010 Hammond Hall, 427 Main St., Winter Harbor, ME.
“Storm” oil on canvas, 20” x 30” New York Artist, Hilda Green Demsky , Artist-in-Residence at Acadia National Park in 2008, is showing her paintings at Hammond Hall Arts Center, August 16 through 31. Many of her oil paintings were created on the unusual surfaces of aluminum, copper, plastic and traditional canvas. The paintings on metal have a vibrancy from allowing the luminous metallic surfaces to show through her interpretations of nature.
Her choice of mylar, a heavy transparent form of plastic, is unique when displayed as cylinders of three dimensions. Allowing the viewer to see the picture from all angles, it adds a new dimension to art that is both representational and abstract. The artist says she is inspired by the cliffs, roaring surf and natural beauty of the Maine coast and inlets. Her paintings evoke an unspoken bond between humans and nature.
Ms. Demsky is the recipient of six national awards, including a Fulbright Fellowship to The Netherlands and a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship to paint in Italy. The artist, known internationally for her paintings of the marine environment, has exhibited in Spain, Morocco, Costa Rica, Greece and Hungary. She just returned from an awarded residency to paint on the coast of Ireland.
A reception for the artist will be held on Friday, August 20 from 6:00 to 7:00 P.M. followed by a chamber music concert featuring noted flutist Carol Wincence and other New York colleagues.
The exhibition and reception are free and open to the public. The artist can be reached at 914 318-4443 or
